Joanne was mentored by textile artist and co-founder of the wonderful family-run

The sessions were tailor made to Joanne's requests which allowed her to work with both traditional
and advanced tools in batik, and experimented with chemical dyes.
Contemporary artist and highly experienced batik dye master, Arwin Hidayat, worked with Joanne
on the Batik Tulis and dyeing techniques. Guru Arwin Hidayat also gave Joanne a special treat by
giving a special insight into his artworks, which he brought along to the studio for some inspiration
and reference.

At KATUNA Studio, Joanne developed an extension of her Labyrinths series of linocut prints into
a batik piece dyed in naphtol. She was also inspired by her day trip to Borobudur, where she
coincidentally stumbled across the less famous Grejar Ayam site, in producing a 2.5m x 1.2m
piece painted in remasol pigments.

Having an interest in film photography, yet a lack of access to equipment in her hometown, Joanne
was chauffered directly from the airport to a film developing session at one of the most successful
contemporary photography art space in the region, Ruang Mes 56. Mentored by the collective's
members, Edwin 'Dolly' Roseno and Denysswara (Gobi), Joanne was also joined by some friends,
including photographer Anom Sugiswoto. The group also tried out printing the developed black and
white film with the studio's enlarger onto photo paper, and later hung out eating Mie Ayam and
setting off fireworks till late.
