Labour Of Love
Each needle on this piece is threaded to depict the blibical verse: Mark Chapter 10, Verse 25, "It is easier for a camel to go through a needle's eye than for a rich man to enter the Kingdom Of Heaven." This is a strong hyperbolic expression to represent anything that is very difficult to do. Dr John Lightfoot, in his Hebrew exercitations upon St. Matthew's gospel (vol. 2 p.219). He quotes instances from the Blinical writings of a very similar phrase intended to represent something that is possible. For example, he quotes one rabbi disputing another, who says, "Perhaps thou art one of those who can make an elephant pass through the eye of a needle; that is, who speak things that are impossible." St. Jerome says, "It is not the absolute impossibility of the thing which is set forth, but the infrequency of it." The body of the butterfly (representing flitting moments of life) is sown to the safety net of the green nest with the word, "LOVE", threaded on its body with red string. Its wings have two facets. One plain and the other colourful. The chains represent bondage where love is concerned because it is a bond not to be separated. Mediums of colour include, water colour, colour pencils, oil pastels and acrylic; signifying the richness of love. Many a time were my fingers pricked and the drops of blood on the safe nest depicts the painful Labour Of Love. On its right wing, another painful Labour Of Love was stamped on shrink plastic to signify the deep transient and transformation of the meaning of LOVE as it matures over the years. The beauty of Love is expressed in the pearls embedded in the nest. My impression of a 5cm by 8cm piece of artwork is unconventional (5cm by diameter of rubber ring base and 8cm by height) because LOVE is blind. The rings on the rubber base were selected because in my opinion, Love can also be cyclical especially when the same choices and decisions were made despite the progress of time...
The bottomline: Let us learn contentment in a low state and to watch against the LOVE of riches in a high state.
