at Joan Bowen @ The Village
LATENT SPACES + Mi Casa Su Casa
"The community has to play its part to help to integrate those with
special needs into our society. An good example of a ground-up
effort, not depending on the government, is the Joan Bowen café.
Joan Bo Wen is a young lady with special needs. Her parents wanted to solve her problem; they wanted a safe working environment for her. They opened a café called Joan Bowen café at Jalan Wangi, which is in Sennett Estate. The cafe helps youths with special needs like autism or Down’s Syndrome (currently a crew of about 16 staff) to learn the running it. They learn food preparation with a manual with pictures and detailed instructions - exactly how to do, each step what to put next and with patient guidance, gradually they gain confidence and they are able to serve customers. "
This was mentioned in the National Day Rally Speech by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in 2011.

LATENT SPACES and Mi Casa Su Casa have collaborated to bring you Christmas Flea Market at Joan Bowen @ The Village to draw the crowds in to dine at the cafe. As the years went by, Joan Bowen cafe struggles to sustain. Without customers, the youths will not be able to practice what they were trained to do in the running of the cafe. So please drop in, the lovely youths at Joan Bowen will be delighted to have a chance to serve you, as you enjoy the flea market we have put together.
